Martial God Mask - Death's Head [DWR - 2010]

‘Death’s Head’ is the first release from new Uk Midlands based HNW project Martial God Mask & it’s also the first release on new British label DWR(which is run by Rich who is Martial  God Mask). On offer here is c30 tape with one 15 minute wall of noise on each side of tape.

Side one offers up the track ‘Death’s Head(Phase I to III)’ which is built around a stuck & repetitive noise wall that’s made up from a rapid ‘n’ looped 'train chugging on rail'  type industrial noise texture, which is seared ever so often by feed back risers & roars. Sadly I’m afraid to say this side does little for me; you see the sounds used here just feel too flat, dull & not nasty enough for my liking. There’s also really very little done to move or progress the track over it’s 15 minute runtime, which is ok if your dealing with an enjoyable repetitive wall of noise or an all engulfing wall of suffocation sound- but sadly this side is nether of those; it’s just rather boring & weedy sounding really.

Side two’s track ‘Death’s Head(Phase IV)’ is thankfully much better than the first side & makes this worth picking up. The ‘wall’ here is built around a rapid, roaring & barbaric deep galloping wall of noise tone which really pounds into you in quite an effective & brutal manner like been trampled by hundreds of horses. The tones here are so much more punishing, airless & unforgiving than the first sides & the ‘wall’ drills into you in a hypnotic & violent manner. There’s little textured change through-out the track length, but that doesn’t matter when you have a brutal, thick & flesh pounding wall like this. The track really whizzers by compared with the draging first side.

So ‘Death’s Head’ really is a tale of two sides; with the first side offering up a dull & boring take on industlized wall making & side two bring you a galloping, nasty & unforgiving noise battering in great HNW fashion.
