Mouthus - No Canal [Bottrop-Boy - 2008]No Canal finds Mouthus once more painting a jagged, creative and in places surprising sad & beautiful album. Sadly it's only ltd to 250 so it’s an act quick or regret later scenario as this once again shows them performing at the height of their powers. The first untitled track opens in a very subdued and haunted fashion, it’s built around a flute or flute like sound and organ pump/sad hover. The flute sound often left to trail off for moments on it's own rich in emotional wonder, the track brings to my mind the feeling of a slow autumn leaf fall and an heavy feeling of loss been both beautiful and deeply sad. Track two kicks in a more nasty ‘n’ painful fashion with what sounds like a wind-up guitar sound reeling out a tight barbwire looped riff, along with active & shambolic percussion elements. The track seems to really get very dense and more suffocating as it goes on. The other two tracks again are fair lysuffocating and claustrophobic, but never quite raising to the head squeezing feel of track two -as their often under run by more melancholy and tuneful yet washed out elements. With No Canal Mouthus have create another claustrophobic and sometimes hazed with down-turned beauty masterpiece that really mangers to suck you into it’s own strange jagged and sad world.
