Takeshi Nishimoto - Monologue [Buro - 2007]Monologue is guitarist Takeshi Nishimoto first solo album, though he’s travelled the world playing with many fine musicians. The album is a brilliant mixture of accomplished, yet tuneful and emotional instrumental guitar playing that mixes together classical, jazz, blues and folk forms. Takeshi never shows off clearly he can play his guitar back to front, but this is not about how fast or complex he can play– it’s about build and maintaining rich musically moments. He plays acoustic guitar with such great dexterity and feeling always focus on and making the most beautiful and range of emotional music possible. The album was recorded in a one room with Nishimoto and his guitar and no fancy effects or studio tricks. It goes from deeply sad picked and plucked autumnal forest walks, to life affirming melodic guitar blossoming, to jagged almost discordant awkward edged gloom, to delicate guitar pickings like flower heads noding in the wind that develops into spring days melodic runs through greenery. An exquisitely played and composed collection of tracks which both slows great depth of understand of his instrument and how to make emotional touched and beautiful poignant music. Roger Batty
