Starving Weirdos - Shrine Of The Post-Hypnotic [Root Strata - 2007]Shrine of the post-Hypnotic finds the Starving Weirdos in a more primal, metallic, fiery almost ritual mood. This Also feels like one long trip through their strange sound world, instead of several separate ones that usual make up their albums; this seems to be telling a story, with real thought gone into the track sequencing. The first two tracks Crewell and Droned & Poned are all chugging, discordant and crude construction, with boiling/singeing guitar work, overloaded ritual percussion of noise base that seems to give the feeling of barbaric and fire-lit ceremonies and wardances carried out in over crowded cave networks. Where decaying animal skins covering the floor and semi naked tribe's people are smeared in animals blood, charcoal and decaying greenery, hunched around strange smelling fires and weird rituals. Next we have the title track which feels like we’er in one of the tribes dreams as he moves along a strange and barren beach scape. The weirds mixing slow moving vibe like hits, sea cull calls sinister oceanic wash and growing drones cape . Next we have From The North-West Swells, which returns slightly to the clunky and crude feel of the first few tacks, but seems to be more oddly dreamy and droney. The percussion for the most part has been cut out instead we’re left with slowly unfolding guitar and dronescapes which start off jagged and sharp before it becomes more calmed and darkly smoothed almost as if one of the tribe has escaped from the rest and our making their way though a dark cave network, the only noise the chattering and creepy calling of distant bats. At about the mid-way point in the six minute track, odd almost funky tribe percussive elements come in. Almost like the escapee can hear drums and dancing above ground. Lastly we have Wartime Sunrise which feels like our escapee has finally found his way out into the not often seen sunlight and is met by the sight of slaughter and fly buzzing carnage of a battles end, flint spears sunk deep in fur covered bodies. As a classic Starving Weirdos dronescape unfolds, with a mix of guitar, flute and synth like drones and all manner of strange and mind altering sound matter.Really if you haven’t already experience the Starving Weirdos very distinctive always growing and changing audio world you have to so now, as this is yet another high point in a relative short, but prolific recording career. Really there’s no one quite like them, to find out more about the project, download samples of their work and buy direct homing in on the weirdos home base here. Roger Batty
