Whore’s Breath - Precipitation/Gust [Stemms Audio - 2025]Here from Cincinnati, Ohio’s Whore’s Breath are two weather-themed examples of the wall noise form. Each runs around the twenty-six-minute mark, making for a just over fifty-two-minute full-length release. This is a self-released digital affair. Cover artwork-wise, we have a picture of a rain-washed/ blurred window. The album can be found just here.
Up first, we have “Precipitation”. This is a decidedly dense/ busy ‘wall’- bringing together a trudging-yet-distant lashing churn, with smaller banging, snapping, and clashing tones. The ‘wall’ feels both busy, yet strangle soothing- like finding peace in the eye of the storm.
Next, we have “Gust”. This ‘wall’ is built around a blend of small-grained rushing and searing textures, which are constantly bombarded by thicker/ fuller bass-bound bays. Compared with the last track, this is a lot rawer & battering in its attack- and one gets a feeling of a shift in pace, though I suspect there’s not as much as it seems. For this track, I’m getting a very keen image of lying down being completely wrapped in a cardboard, as you get pushed up & down the shingle beach as the storm rages on & on.
With Precipitation/Gust, Whore’s Breath are trying something a little different with its themes, and I think it really works. Kudos to the project for not resting on its laurels and constantly looking for new ways to approach its walling craft. Roger Batty
