Hana Haruna - The Gospel According To Hana Haruna [Basement Corner Emission - 2025]The Gospel According To Hana Haruna is a three-track release, which blurs the lines between spiteful ‘n’ searing wall of noise and more drifting/choral ambience. It’s a release that once again sees this Portland project pushing at the edges of the wall noise genre, for something rather distinctive. The digital-only album can be found here, on its front cover is a picture of a bible with the release title on.
First out of the bag, we have “Old Covent”- this is a fifteen-minute track which finds skating ‘n’ statically slicing textures meeting this restful/ spiritual ambient element. In my mind, I’m getting the feeling of drifting through ( feet slightly off the ground) a long/ ornately gilted corridor, as clumps of physical static sear at/ lightly eat into the ancient stone work.
Next is “New Covent” which once again comes in at dead on the fifteen-minute mark. Here we find a slow sliding selection of hissing/ dragging, which is fed over a constant microtone grit. There is a slight ambient undercarriage to this track, but it’s less pressing/ way less harmonic/ grand.
Finally, we have “Revelation” which takes up the lion's share of the release. Here we find a blend of steadily jittering/ lightly scribbling hiss, slowly sliding/ crashing textures, and faint airy ambient drifts/ ebbs. Again, there is a wonderful contrast between the noise and ambient elements here.
Once again, this three-track album from Hana Haruna shows why it’s one of the most creative/ rewarding projects in today's walled noise scene. And it really is a crying shame there aren’t more physical releases from this project, as this, and many others of the project's discography, wholeheartedly deserve this treatment. Roger Batty
