Mlehst - An old Broom knows all the dirty Corners [Belief Recordings - 2006]

An old Broom knows all the dirty Corners managers to sound both crude, odd alluring, bizarre and some how haunting in places, Which is a difficult mix to pull off with such conviction as  is show here. This is one of the many released albums under the name of Mlehst  a one man noise and sound project of UK based All Brentnall, who formed the project in 1992.

This stands as some how more subtle and less nightmarish than the recent reissue of one of their early master work’s Notes of Obscure Origin on Andy Ortmann's Nihilst label (reviewed here). Similar build block and tools are used- crude and murky electro pluses and synth discharge, but instead of been formed in sewer hugging sickness this to me has an almost low-grade spacey feel about it. It feels like something that could have been used of John carpenters low budget first film the sci-fi comedy Dark star, not sure why I guess it’s the feeling melancholy lost in the stars feeling the film evokes, as well as  the solitude and beauty of outer space. Tracks often  start awkward  or  blunt in their noise shapes, but by the end of it Brentnall has managed to pull out the quite wonderful emotional singed tones, that show their own forlorn beauty, like beautiful red rose growing from in-between wires, steel and circuit boards.

Really a very accomplished and well painted collection of noise sound art, which tips its hat towards haunted cold beauty and almost a claming ambient heart in places. To find out more about  Mlehst and to buy direct drop in here.
