Whore’s Breath - Aftermath [HNW Netlabel - 2024]Aftermath is a textural detailed, yet eerily atmospheric example of wall craft from Whore’s Breath. The release finds the Cincinnati-based project offering up a single thirty-six-minute track, which wonderfully balances rewarding detail with a feeling of creepy/ crawly unease. This is a digital release that appears on UK’s HNW netlabel. For the cover artwork, we get what looks like an extremely hazed/ blurred aerial picture of a housing estate, this and the release title add a feeling of mystery and unease to proceedings. The release can be found here
The single self-titled track is a decidedly busy & detailed affair. It's built around layers of earthy scratch, grit-like rattle, wooded creaking, dust shovelings, and eerie knocking. These are all weaved with moments of brief owl-like call & bay. Each of the elements here are crystal clear and fully- defined in their sonic clarity. These are all then layered together in a wholly captivating & intriguing manner. I could have easily listened to this track twice this length, and still be wholly engrossed/ engaged.
Aftermath is a masterful example of rewardingly textured wall craft, with the subtly eerie and uneasy atmosphere adding another dimension to the proceedings. This is one of my favourite Whore’s Breath releases thus far, and one of this year's scene highlights. And really I think this deserves a full physical release, as it’s such a well-made & wholly engaging example of wall matter Roger Batty
