Sado Rituals - Audrey Horne [Hot Fuzz - 2024]Here we from Poland’s Sado Rituals is a four-track wall-noise release themed around Audrey Horne- an eighteen-year-old character from David Lynch’s Twin Peaks, who is rather obsessed with Special Agent Dale Cooper. All four of the tracks are dense, taut, and set examples of the walled noise genre. The release appears on Fort Worth’s Hot Fuzz- either as a c60, or a digital release. I’m reviewing the latter. Cover artwork, unsurprisingly we get a picture of Audrey Horne, aka Michigan-born actress Sherilyn Fenn. To hear samples/ buy direct drop by here
Each of the tracks runs at exactly fifteen minutes. We open with “Audrey I”- here we find a taut blend of juddering ‘n’ churning low end, which is covered by small jittering & glitching static tones. The ‘wall’ has an effective feeling of locked-in, if very slightly quirky tension about it.
Next, we have “Audrey II”- this is centred around a constantly rolling & lo-fi roasting textures- it's topped with small skipping ‘n’ jumping tones. This wall feels decidedly nervy & agitated in its attack. “Audrey III” brings together a muffed/ distance machine drone, with a tight jaggedly jittering tonality. The drone on this one has hints of eeriness about it, and jitter has an appealing taut flow to its pattern. At points it feels like it could suddenly speed up/ off- but never does, this is my favourite track here.
The final track is “Audrey IV”- which mixes a rapid galloping in a liquid-like tone- with a beaded rattle. This features some rewardingly flirting and glitching subtone detail, and both patterns are engaging in their crude & slightly curved paths.
The Sado Rituals project has been AWOL for a few months from the scene, which is a pity as it did stand as one of the most consistent & largely always worthy projects in the scene. So it’s nice to see Audrey Horne appearing…let’s hope there are more releases in the pipeline!. Roger Batty
