Worship - Psychedelics [Self release - 2024]Here’s a recent four-track album from Worship- the rather mysterious walled noise project, which often adds creative twists to its take on the genre. As well as theming all of their releases on celebrating the female form in a non-smutty manner. As with most of this project's output, this is released by itself, coming as a digital download album. Cover work wise we have a picture of a nude Asian woman covered in psychedelic kaleidoscope light shapes/ patterns. The album can be found here.
Each of the four tracks runs between the nine & sixteen-minute mark. We open with “Is It Working Yet?”- this begins with a mixture of rapidly purr-bound juddering & hazy sorting of rattling. At around the four-minute mark, this swirling sonic haze-like texture is added- and within this, are these stretches wavering voice-like elements- these are never clear enough to fully define, within the last few minutes a meaty bass purr coming into play.
Next is “Carnival” which opens with these fading in tones- which do sound like blurred & morphed field recordings of what might be fairground music & rattling of flag posts in the wind. By around the fourth minute/ midway of this track, things have become a lot more violently buffeting with these wired rattles/ twist tones which sound like lightly melted fairground recording rides.
Track three is “Fluctuations” Here we find a mix of distant hiss wave-like sweep, pared-back knocking, and building buffeting wind tones. A bit later this decidedly haunting whistling tone is added- at points, it almost sounds harmonic. This is the longest of the four tracks here, and the most appealing/ entrancing- as each time I‘m playing it I notice other sub tones, and subtle layer detail.
Finally, we have “Permanent Colours” here we find a mix of choppy, stretching, and swirling lows & mids. Sounding like a blended & warped recording of an old aircraft flying & sluggish machine sounds- with the whole thing lined with a covering of crisp tonal crackle & judder.
Psychedelics is a creative & wholly worthy journey into morphed & warped wall craft from Worship. It certainly is wonderful to still see this project push the genre in interesting ways- and long may it last!. Roger Batty
