Utterblight - Bulger [Untitled Record Label - 2024]Fitting its theme of child abduction, torture and murder here we have brutally churning & baying ‘wall’ from UK’s Utterblight. This just over ten-minute track is a digital release on UK-based label Untitled Record Label. For the release cover artwork, we have the infamous CCTV footage of the two older boys who led two-year-old James Bulger away to his terrible fate. The release can be found just here
The single track comes in at the 10. 05 mark. It opens with a fading-in-grey drone, then we shift into a cascading ‘n’ churning blend of a wayward bass buffet, mid-ranged sway ‘n’ swirling, and rattling hiss ‘n’ reel spin. There is both an evenness & unpredictability to the ‘walls’ layers. And I’d say it’s a perfect length- creating its churningly intense/ unpleasant sonic air.
Bulger mixing of shifting ‘n’ swaying layers is most effective, and if you are looking for intense and grim wall craft with unpleasant undertones, then this will most certainly fit the bill. Incidental this isn’t the first wall noise release to use this case as a theme, Uk’s Cherry Blossom At Night released a CDR in 2015 of the same title- taking three walls, and seventy minutes of brutal sound craft.
