Olion - Meditation Of The Wicked [Self release - 2024]Meditation Of The Wicked is a three-track release from this Polish wall noise/ drone project. Each of the tracks slides in at around the ten-minute mark- with the tone of all three being very droned out and ANW bound. This is a self-released and digital affair-with the decidedly murky cover art taking in a rather abstract figure- whose head gear rather looks like that of Star Wars Darth Vader. Drop by here to check out the release.
We open with “First Mediation” – here we find a muffled air vent hum, underfed by the constant rustle of static. There’s a feeling of slowly travelling underground with this track, and one can almost sense the dank smell of earth & taste mild grittiness in between your teeth.
Next is “ Second Meditation” Here we find a low-end temple-pressing rumble, which is topped by the slowly shaking ‘n’ churning earthy grit swirl. It feels like there is almost air or a cool breeze running through the track. And I can almost picture standing over the long dark shaft down into a mining pit
Finally, we have the “Third Meditation”. This brings together a crude/less-defined low-end drone- which is topped by a blend of hiss & dusty clutter. This ‘wall’ is ok, but not quite as captivating as the other two- I just felt the textures & their laying out didn’t trigger any imagery for me.
It’s around two or so years since I last heard something from Olion, and this isn’t half bad- so it’s good to see the project still has the ability to create engaging wall matter. If you enjoy where dark & murky drones meet textured ANW then give this a go. Roger Batty
