Ohlmeier / Fischerlehner / Khroustaliov - In The Gloaming [Not Applicable - 2023]In The Gloaming is an electroacoustic improv album that shifts from the abstractly moody- yet taut, onto the warblingly noisy, though to the hissing-to-brood bound. The six-track album appears on London’s Not Applicable- as either a CD or download- I’m reviewing the former. The album brings together Lothar Ohlmeier- Bass Clarinet, Isambard Khroustaliov – Electronics, and Rudi Fischerlehner – Drums. The track runtimes sit between the four and ten-minute mark- with a keen edge of either sonic tautness or atmospheric alien unease to most of the tracks unfolds.
We open with the nearing nine minutes of “Husks” which pulls together caught ‘n’ stretched horn hover, springing percussive disquiet, electro micro chatter, and glitching fiddle. As we move on we have forking junk churn ‘n’ scrape meets inquisitive-to-mysterious warbling of “Violet Weeds”.
The album plays out with just over ten minutes of “Pixel Head”- this is built around jerking percussive twists, ethnically playful drum fills, and furling ‘n’ flirting horn work- which moves between the abstract & semi-harmonic.
I’ve certainly heard past work from Mr Khroustaliov, and he always puts interesting angles on things. I don’t think I was aware of either Fischerlehner or Ohlmeier beforehand- but there’s no doubt the trio play together well, and if you enjoy the more abstractly sci-fi to more jarringly electro side of improv this album will appeal.
