Mothboy - Deviance [Ad Noiseam - 2006]Mothboy adds all manner of atmospheric cinematics, experimental edges and varied vocals to his jacked up and dance heavy electroinca. Making what seems on first playing to be quite pop based ,a lot darker and experimental monster the deeper you get into it. And that’s the thing that makes this different and interesting is it concentrate on both your feet and your mind. Each track has its own clever sound use touching down in hip-hop beats, pumped up bassy techno work outs, ambient lushness, synth mood scapes. Take I hit if I’m caught it I’m which starts off all tooled up with flashy head shaking beats, but all time there’s a rich desert plane of ambience dwelling at it soul which takes full fight as the beats exit and you drift on a cloud of mellow sound towards the end of the track. I can see cites starts up sounding like urbanised uk rap via electronia and turns into more sinister scuffling landscape of broken horror piano fills and the disturbed rant of the rapper, I guess psycho rap via knife edge cinematic. Though out he makes sure you could dance if you wish to or just enjoy the depth of sound art on display. An album with a hard man surface, that just bellow the surface has a yearning creative soul waiting to spread it's wings. A very satisfying album that will surprise and reward patient listeners.
