Hana Haruna - The Light Shines From The Soles Of Her Feet [Endogenic Noise Records - 2024]The Light Shines From The Soles Of Her Feet is a recent release from Portland’s wall noise project Hana Haruna. The three featured twenty-minute tracks mixing together detailed & creative noise texturing, with sweeping & moodily ebbing ambient undercurrents to a great effect.
Theme-wise the tracks here are based around the 𝘏𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘑𝘗 𝘧𝘪𝘳𝘴𝘵 𝘨𝘦𝘯 𝘷𝘵𝘶𝘣𝘦𝘳𝘴- which after a brief internet search seems to be some form of manga depicting female superheroes. The release appears on Glasgow’s Endogenic Noise Records- as purely a digital download. Artwork-wise we get a close-up of some Manga character's feet with light shining on them- with oriental writing running up the side of the picture. The release can be found here The first track out of the gate is “AK47Rose”. It’s a mixture of urgently sparking ‘n’ sliding static flit, slower/ moodier mid-range slice ‘n’ knock, and rather spacy/ mysteriously toned floating ambience. It’s a great entry point to the album's almost three-dimensional quality. Next, we have “CHAMA!”- here we find a rather spaced-out, at point rather eerier track- which blends weird reverbed whispers, and a selection of swipe ‘n’ punch-like tones- which feel like they’ll form into a rhythmic pattern, but never do. All is underfed by occasional ebbing ambient drifts. Finally, we have “I'm Going To Miss You, Yozora Mel”. Here we find a mixture of thin but fairly frantic jittering static, sudden bass purrs, stretched/ morphed female talking, and a brooding backdrop of slightly ritual ambient swirl and light toll. The track managers feel both subtle unsettling & dreamy- which is a real feat in itself. The Light Shines From The Soles Of Her Feet is a masterful example of creative walled noise- wonderfully blended detailed noise texturing, with rewardingly mysterious ambient elements. Such a pity this didn’t get a physical release- which it truly does deserve. Roger Batty
