Winters - S/t [Rise Above - 2006]Winters debut ep at times sounds like if Marc Boland had decided to go down the doom metal path, or at other times it's a indie, grunge come doom cross breed. Having it’s own very distinct sound, thats mainly mid pace to upbeat riffing. Really giving an interest and different turn on the Doom genre , since everyone and their mother seems to want to sound like Sunn0))) at the present. It’s all nicely produced with a meaty and heavy lo-fi flavour to the guitars, drums you really feel, with Paul Fyle’s glam gone sour with a hint of new wave vocals Cleary heard though out. Each song only lasts just over the three minute mark, which is very compact for doom. With only four tracks on offer it sadly means this is all over too soon , here’s hoping there’s full length is on the way as Winters really do have a unique and different take on genre balancing perfectly meomberble gloomy riffing with melodic traces. A very rewarding debut that’s both original and well written and played, just a pity it only last just over 15 mins. Roger Batty
