Sebastian Tomb / Sado Rituals - New Year's Eve [Gates Of Hypnos - 2023]Here’s a wall noise split themed around/ celebrating New Year's Eve. Both tracks slide in at around the fifteen-minute mark, with each offering up a different take on this most extreme of genres. This is a digital release which appears on Poland’s Gates Of Hypnos. Cover artwork-wise we get a black & white picture of two women dressed in sparkly dresses- one is holding a shot/ cocktail looking off camera, while the other is caressing the arm she has the drink in. It looks like it’s a still from a 1930s or 1940’s film. The release can be found just here.
Both tracks here are untitled. The first one is from Sebastian Tomb, and it opens with a loop of a man talking about a tragic decision on NYE. Then within a minute or so, we’re ‘wall’- it brings together a selection of knocking & slightly crumbling lower to mid-ranged tones- these are underfed by a wavering ‘n’ warbling high-pitch single tone. With along the way some nicely subtle additions like brooding sweeps ‘n’ shudders, and mid-range sub-tone battering’s. Another very effective & light experimental take on the walled noise from this Berlin project.
The second track is from Poland’s Sado Rituals. And here we get a more meatily burrowing ‘n’ droning ‘wall’. It’s built around a grinding/ slightly purring low-end centre- on top of this we have a locked static toned juddered, a beaded buzz, and a faint subtone gallop. This ‘wall’ has a nicely gnarly -yet focused feel to its attack. And it’s most appearing in its grinding, slightly ragged weight- I could easily listen to the track if it was twice this length.
All in all, this is a most worthy split- highlighting two different takes on the walled noise form. So here’s goodbye to 2023, and hello to 2024 very soon!. Roger Batty
