Stabbed In The Face - Stabbed In The Face (DVD) [Wild Eye Releasing - 2023]

Stabbed In The Face is an early 2000’s low-budget slasher that’s high with gore, sleaze, and soundtracked with wonky ‘n’ crude punk rock music.   Here from Wild Eye’s Raw and Extreme series is a DVD release of film.

Stabbed In The Face is from the year 2004, and it’s the second film from New Orleans Jason Matherne. He has five features and four shorts- with his features going from Gorefaced Killer- aka Attack Of The Cockfaced Killer ( 2002), Goregasm (2007),  Grimewave: CockFace III (2013), and comedy horror Silk Scream (2017).

The lead plot of the film is fairly run-of-mill/ standard- a group of teens go to party, drink, take drugs, and get laid at a run-down/meant-to-be abandoned house out in the woods. We get a selection of teen stereotypes- which are often lightly sent up. We have neatly gelled hair jock Joseph(Bill Heintz),  bad boy trailer trash Terry(Eric Fox), glasses-wearing meek ‘n’ mild geek Bruce( Steve Waltz) and his bitchy acid-tongued blond girlfriend. There’s an often puking metalhead, a sleeping-with-everyone brunette, and a few other female characters.

In a flashback we find out the house the group are going to was the site of a double murder a decade back. When a wife finds her baseball hat-wearing husband making the beasts with two backs in the barn. She slashes the throat of the totally naked woman and stabs her man to be gunned down by the cops.

When the group touched down at the house there are a few options for who could be the ‘main’ killer. We have one character who likes drawing gory art, another whose sister was slaughtered a few months early,  and there’s a recently escaped serial killer. As the film unfolds we get a fair bit of fairly extreme gore- there’s a nipple cut off & a very bloody throat slashing, several gut slashings, a few knives in the eye/ head,  and a few other brutal stabbings ‘n’ slashing. We also get a fair bit of female nudity- which is sometimes blended with the gore to a rather flitch-inducing/nasty effect.

The acting from the leads is largely passable to good for a low-budget fare- though some of the actors in the smaller roles are fairly wooden/ reading off cue cards badly. But let's face it, you're not watching a film called Stabbed In The Face for great acting.

The film runs at the one hour & nineteen-minute mark- keeping up its pace throughout. It’s all soundtrack by punk-to-slightly metallic fare- this is all rather badly played/ executed, but it all has a fairly wonky & crude charm- with some of the tracks having rather preserve &  violently comic tilt to their lyrics.

Moving onto this recently released DVD, and we get only one extra( aside from the trailer). This is a seventeen-minute making-off. It takes in interviews with the film's director, and many of the cast- who are also part of the crew too. As well as some behind-the-scenes footage. This is ok, and worth a watch- giving insight into (relatively) modern low-budget film-making, and how they tried to develop/ move on from their first film.

So in finishing- if you enjoy your slashers cheap, bloody, and fleshy Stabbed In The Face will most certainly appeal. And I’ll be checking out some more of Mr Matherne's filmography as soon as I can, as he has a talent for making effective low-budget horror fare.
