Koobaatoo Asparagus - Self [No Skinny Jeans - 2023]

Self presents us with two meatily battering and brutally roasting examples of the walled noise from this long-running & ultra prolific California-based project. With the release having a low-key sort of self-discovery/ mysticism theme to it.

This is a digital self-released affair. With the monochrome cover art featuring an illustration of a hand holding three smaller rings- these are attached to a larger snake-eating itself tail ring- which has an eye in its centre. The release can be found just here

Each of the tracks coming in at dead on eight-minute release- so if this had been a physical release- it would have either been a three-inch CDR, or a C20 cassette.  Both tracks are self-titled affairs- so the first track consists of a rapid cluttering grind that meets grainy jittering. Together these textures create a rewarding feeling of runaway manic-ness, with images of both constantly pouring lava and speeding down a  bucking ‘n’ rusty train track abandoned. It’s a nicely intense ride- which feels just right at its eight-minute mark.

The second track is a lot more sluggish & pelting in its attack. With the ‘wall’ being built around loose choppy bass flows- edged with constantly hacking ‘n’ pelt static graining. This track features a most rewarding feeling of pouring & slowing into itself self vibe- though of course in reality this is very much an illusion of the ‘wall’.  Imagery wise I’m getting a pile of large plastic pots being slowly melted- as they scoldingly drip, violently spit, and collapse into each other in a boiling, at points firing up mess

Self is a short-but well formed & realized wall noise release from Koobaatoo Asparagus. With both walls been appealing in both their intensity and use of textures. With the theme/ artwork been something kind of different too for this genre.
