Rosie Kelvin - Theres Nothing Out There [Its Wall Noise - 2023]Rosie Kelvin is a recent project from respected American noise maker Sean E. Ramirez-Matzus (theNIGHTproduct, Thewhitehorse, Black Leather Jesus,[Untitled]). Sonically the two tracks featured on this C32/ digital download blend together atmospheric textured noise/ wall craft with an underbelly of eerie ambience- which sounds like it ordinates from manipulated field recordings. The project takes its name from an unfortunate side character/victim in Lucio Fulci’s gory & eerie zombie picture City Of The Living Dead aka The Gates Of Hell (1980). In the film Rosie (Daniela Doria) features in one of the film's classic gore gross-out moments- where she first cries tears of blood- then literally throws up her guts in a car with her boyfriend as they are making it out late at night near a graveyard. Doria also appeared in Fulci’s House By The Cemetery (1981) where she gets a knife pushed through her skull & out of her mouth. The release's cover features a still of said bloody chuck up- I’m reviewing the digital version of the release, so can’t comment on the tape- though there are still copies left here.
The first track is entitled “There’s Nothing Out There I” which relates to a line of dialogue Rosie( or her boyfriend) say before she chucks up her guts. The track brings together a selection of lightly buck rips, tears, and judders. Around/ underneath this we get sways/ sudden building ridges of wind like billow & eerie reverb- which at points sound rather footstep-like. The tracks is both texturally rewarding, and decidedly chilling too- with some nice moments of taut tension when the under textures get more noisy/ manic.
The other track is “There’s Nothing Out There II”. Here we find a more consistently hacking ( though blunt/ muffled) selection of rips ‘n’ tears- below this we get a less easily defined blend of reverbed knocks, rumbles, and bangs. And as it goes on the whole thing becomes more disorientating/ muffled around its edges. The track has a great feeling of panicking disorientation- with a nice undercurrent of eerie disquiet & foreboding- very cleverly emulation in sonic form the feeling of the otherworld creepiness featured in the nighttime scenes in the film.
I’m presuming There’s Nothing Out There is the one-off and only release Rosie Kelvin- which is fine, it just would have been nice to hear some more of this rewarding blend of textured wall craft & eerier ambience. In finishing another very skilful executed & sonically realized release from Mr Ramirez-Matzus, and if like me you enjoy noise with a gore/ creepy theme- this is a real no-brainer!. Roger Batty
