Koobaatoo Asparagus - Bond Girl [No Skinny Jeans - 2023]Bond Girl servers up two dense and relentlessly pummelling examples of the walled noise form- from this ultra prolific/long-running California-based project. Each track comes in at dead on the forty-two-minute mark, and each is as unforgiving as the other. This digital release appears on the project's own label. Theme wise as its title suggests is bondage- with the front cover taking in a picture of a woman's head in a leather/ rubber mask with a ball gag in. The release can be heard/ downloaded just here.
Both tracks here are self-titled. The first ‘wall’ brings together a bass-bound rumbling ‘n’ tumbling tone, with hacking to lightly jittering static grain. The whole thing feels like one is slowly rolling down a rock-edged hill inside a wooden barrel filled with tiny stones. It’s both hellishly dense in its low end- yet rewardingly agitated in its locked-down static detail. Sure it’s not the most distinctive selection of textures you’ll ever have heard- but they are layered & mixed together in a brutally appealing manner, which pulls you in & keeps you there for the track's forty-two-minute run.
The second & final track brings together a fixed, rushing, and slightly muffled low end with persistent hacking tonalities. Together these textures create some effective sonic illusions- which at points make one think there is both shift & jump within the wall, but in reality, it’s decidedly set & firm in its flow. Where the first track felt rather entrancing in its attack, this feels a little more urgent & battering in its flow.
Bond Girl is another workman-like HNW release from Koobaatoo Asparagus featuring two lengthy submersions in the walling form. It’s certainly not a release for scene newbies, or those seeking the more creative fare- but if you’re looking for pure ‘n’ simple wall noise this fits that label. Roger Batty
