Lull - That Space Somewhere [Cold Spring Records - 2023]That Space Somewhere is the 8th full-length album from UK ambient/ drone venture Lull. The project has been active since 1992 and is all the work of Mick Harris (ex-Napalm Death, Scorn, etc). The CD album is Lull’s first release in fourteen years, and it appears on Cold Spring Records. Featured are four lengthy tracks that will send the listener slowly but surely into its expanding & shifting sonic terrains, which are as vast, as they are bone-chilling/ darkly hued. The CD comes presented in a four-panel monochrome digipak-this features pictures of huge night-time skies, and vast grey waterways. A simple, but moodily effective bit of packaging which tells you all you need to know. The album can be purchased directly from here.
The album opens with “Range” here we find slowly gliding ‘n’ slightly ringing mid’s meeting cavernous bass flows ‘n’ churns. With subtle lines of tonal rush, higher ranged bay ‘n’ whistle, and eerier ebb edging the proceedings. There is the sinister billowing chime ‘n’ hope suffocating bass tones of “Unplumbed”, which later adds into the mix uneasy scraps, brooding whistles, and foreboding slides.
The album plays with the track “Way” which brings together slow-mo warbling bass drones, stretching metallic ringing, and uneasy mid-range pitch pull. All creating a feeling of both drowning vastness and pressing on your face suffocation.
That Space Somewhere is primed perfectly to let your mind drift off into shadowy & half-formed places. It’s an album that rewards repeated plays, and the more you sonically travel its grey, foreboding, and empty roadways- you'll reveal its layers & subtle tone detail build. Roger Batty
