Death In June - NADA-IZED! [NER - 2023]

" />

It’s fair to say that Death In June has always been a controversial project, but much of this comes from its use of symbolism & provocative subject matter. Aside from a few slight deviations, the project output has been focused in and around the Neo-Folk, often stripped-back, guitar and stern baritone singing of the project's kingpin Douglas P.  However, "NADA-IZED!" is a huge sonic departure from what we’d normally expect from DIJ, as it’s purely focused on electronica, which often moves towards the more beat ‘n’ dance bound side of things.

The CD/Download album is an eleven-track affair, with the focus being almost purely on covers of the project's more recent work. Some are quite drastically different takes on tracks, but what it does highlight above all else is Douglas P's ability to compose some great melodies, and of course write clever, at times thought-provoking & dry stabbing/ mocking, lyrics.

The release appears on NER which has released most of the project's forty-plus year's discography. The CD comes presented in a dull matt laminated colour slipcase and on its front we have a decidedly sinister staring Douglas P. in his white mask and camouflage look, with the whole thing topped off by a black Covid mask. The texts & the project's logo 'New Play Tunes For New Plague Times' are picked out in glossy dark pink ink.

For this album, Douglas P is joined by Miro Snejdr, who, apart from his musical contributions to the Peaceful Snow album and live performances between 2012-2016, also appeared on 2015's Best Of Lounge Corps limited release album, which as its title suggests, took in easy-listening lounge versions of some DIJ songs. Sonically however, this particular album is largely built around beats, keyboards, and electronica, with of course Douglas P's vocals, which go from sinister, semi-spoken to sing-song baritone. There are a few subtle touches of bass, guitar, and live drums here ‘n’ there- but largely this is an electronic affair.

The tracks featured mainly come from the band's relatively more recent releases, and for the most part the new takes do work. Yes, some do take a little longer to get use to than others, but most did click/work with me. Some of my present favourite moments come in the form of “Going Dark” from 2018’s ESSENCE! album which blends tolling ’n’ cascading keys, snapping ‘n’ hissing beats, and distant synth horn touches.  Then there’s the pulsing synth lines meeting the steady electro bass juddering groove of “The Pole Star Of Eden”, also from ESSENCE!. We also have snapping beats meeting throbbing EBM tones, and bright easy listening key tone strikes of “Wolf Rose” from 2010’s Peaceful Snow.  The most raving, pulsing,  wavering, synth moodiness of the songs is left for “Heaven Street” taken from 1983’s The Guilty Have No Pride album. This album plays out on “Last Europa Kiss” from 2008’s The Rule Of Thirds album which is all hissing, snapping, woozy beats/ electronics and a wavering central synth line.

It’s great to hear these new electro-focused takes on DIJ back catalogue, and for the most part, "NADA-IZED! is both a varied and enjoyable ride. Yes, it won’t be for the purists who are looking for the band's typical sound, but if you enjoy more electro-focused sounds/ creative re-takes of tracks this most certainly will appeal.
