Ennaytch - Vacuum Cleaner Music For The Unsatisfied Housewife [Basement Corner Emission - 2023]

Vacuum Cleaner Music For The Unsatisfied Housewife Vol 4: Oppressive Place Laid Waste is another single-hour-long trip into dense ‘n’ textural effect shifting walled noise from this Tucson, Arizona-based project.

As with all of the other releases in this series- this appears as a digital release on Portland’s Basement Corner Emission.  The story of the housewife whose plight runs through all of these releases finds her expressing her anger through reverbed wildfire, gunshots & the sound of broken glass. The release can be found here

I’d rather enjoyed vols 2 & 3 of this series, so when I saw there was another vol out I had high hopes. Unfortunately, I found this the lesser of the three releases- which at points was decidedly trying to get all the way through.

The issue is that the shifting and darting textures that are fed out in here appear predictable, and the sounds themselves feel decidedly bland- almost as if they're just from a sound effects record. We have the following repeated elements, reverbed gunshot, rolling in glass tinkle, and distant wildfire crackle ‘n’ feast. Surrounding these selection elements we have a constantly muffled gallop- which consists of rattling mids, small grain jitters, and air ventilation like judder.

I’ve now played the track through several times above & beyond the normal it takes for ‘walls’ to click. Hoping it might open up more, or I’d pick out more interesting details- but sadly it just uncovers more the rather lazy looping, uninteresting sound use, and generally rather lazy feel of the track.

Let us hope that Vacuum Cleaner Music For The Unsatisfied Housewife Vol 4: Oppressive Place Laid Waste is just a bad day at the wall-noise office for Ennaytch. As I think the other two releases I heard showed real promise and tried to do something a little different with the genre- because this just feels very convey belt & lazy, lacking the imagination/ talent of the other two releases.
