Luer - Constant [Oxidation - 2022]Luer is one of the projects of Montana-based noise maker Matt Taggart (40 Watt Womb, PCRV Quartet, Pop Culture Rape Victim). Constant is its third release, and takes in two twenty-minute plus tracks that sit somewhere between moody noise scaping, and hovering droning synth scaping. All making for a release that is both rewarding active/ shifting, but equally atmospheric. The album appears on Illinois Oxidation- coming as either a pro-CDR, or recycled tape release. Both versions feature a crude cut-up face & body collage artwork, which fits nicely the sounds within. The album- in either version- can be purchased here.
So first up we have “Constant One” which comes in at nearly twenty-six minutes. It opens with a blend of coolly hovering Sci-fi drone layers, and subtly buzzing ‘n’ fiddling tones. As we move on we shift through purring electro glitches & technology junk manipulation. Onto thick hazes of pressing synth hover, which is edged with siren wave drift, atmospheric textural slice, glitching ebbs and intergalactic whooshing ‘n’ phaser swipes.
Next up we have “Constant Two” which comes in at the shorter just over the nineteen-minute mark. It opens with a mix of brooding drone hover, busy electro-texturing sweep, and hints of chopped-up piano muzak. As we move on we drifted into mixes of junk clang looping, buzzing synth purr, and static gradient fork ‘n’ fiddle. And drives into high-pitch sour ‘n’ shift meets textural busyness.
Constant severs up two decidedly shifting & varied noise-making, which are often underfed by atmospheric synth scaping. Meaning, that there is a lot more depth and repayable quality to the whole thing than many a common garden noise release- all proving that Mr Taggart is indeed a distinctive and creative figure within the wider genre.
