RJ Myato - Excavations Of Being [HNW Netlabel - 2023]Excavations Of Being finds Pittsburgh’s RJ Myato serving up two twenty minute examples of walled noise. One ‘wall’ has a ghost in a machine-type vibe, as we have a densely packed track that’s alive with eerier mechanical-like drift ‘n’ hover. And the other ‘wall’ has a decidedly nasty cluttering ‘n’ shredding quality to it. Excavations Of Being is a digital download release, which appears on London’s HNW Netlabel. For the cover artwork, we find a grey-to-black condensation-like backdrop, topped with flame-red-like drips. The release can be downloaded from just here.
First up we have "Decisive Terrain". The wall is a dense ‘n’ murky mixture of slightly roaming billow & constantly ball-bearing rattle. Around these two key elements we can make out drilling tone drifts, and cluttering chop. With the whole ‘wall’ giving the vibe of a haunted factory floor- where the spirits of those who lost their lives in the machinery have turned on the factory floor when the daytime/ living staff are back home sleeping. This is a wonderfully entrancing wall- which I could have easily played for twice its length.
Next is "Continually Resurgent Separation". And where the first track was hazed & murky, this ‘wall’ is a nastily shredding affair- with its blend of constant rolling ‘n’ static barded billowing, hacking clutter, and searing sherd. I’ll have to admit on my first play-through, I was a little underwhelmed after the great first track. But I few more plays down the line, it’s grown on me- with me now picking up more layer detail.
Excavations Of Being is another rewarding release from RJ Myato- with two different takes on walling, yes I prefer the first track, but the seconds a grower- and the contrast between the two is most effective. Roger Batty
