Koobaatoo Asparagus - Wall Fetish [No Skinny Jeans - 2023]Wall Fetish features two examples of wall-craft from long-running and prolific California-based Koobaatoo Asparagus. Each track comes in at the fifteen-minute mark with a different textural focus- though theme wise it's sleazy-fetish-focused all the way. Like much of this project's output, this release appears on the project's own No Skinny Jeans label. With the monochrome cover taking in a picture of a black bunny-eared ‘n’ masked topless woman staring out at you. The release can be found just here.
The first track is entitled “Milking Me”. It’s built around a bluntly muffled ‘n’ droning set bass tumble, which is surrounded by steady hacking static tones. The low end feels both bothersome and slightly baying in its attack, while the static hacks feel both numbing & somewhat entrancing- which I guess is perfect for the theme. As the track progresses, I’m getting some effective audio tricky going on- as at points it feels like the low end has been pulled out in a blunter droning form, and the static is seemingly clustering/ building in places- but in reality, I think the whole thing is very set/ firm.
The next track is entitled “Bulls Dangling”, and fittingly it feels a little loser. We find a compressed rolling ’n’ droning low-end tone- this is surrounded by selection of ragged & rickety scrapes- some of these feel more circular, while others feel more random. The whole ‘wall’ feels very lo-fi and ramshackle in its attack, and one keeps feel the whole thing is going to fall apart into a truly haphazard mess- yet it never does, just keeps its decidedly fragile and messy structure. Once again I’m getting some neat patterns/ shifts occurring, and to be honest, I’m not sure if the shifts are real or not- as the whole thing is so loose.
Wall Fetish is another most consistent release from Koobaatoo Asparagus- with both walls having their worth and pull. It would be great to see this project getting more physical release, and considering it’s ten plus year tenner in the scene- some form of career-celebrating boxset would be more than due…surely there is a label that could be open to this?!.
