Dead Voices On Air - Abrader Redux [Cold Spring - 2022]

With over 80 releases to his credit as Dead Voices On Air, Mark Spybey's project debut is still much sought-after, even following a re-release. Abrader was first released on Akifumi Nakajima's (Aube) G.R.O.S.S. label in 1994. The 2009 reprint saw the addition of two bonus tracks (featuring cEvin Key (Skinny Puppy) and Cold Spring's Abrader Redux sweetens the pot again with two further tracks from this time frame. Now coming in at 7 tracks and over 67 minutes, Abrader Redux is the definitive edition for fans clamoring for a reissue.

Much like the tool that bears its name, Abrader uses grinding, circular repetition to wear down the listener and instill its message. Constructed with highly processed sounds formed into hypnotic loops, Abrader takes an approach not dissimilar to Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music. Using repetition and persistence to disassociate the listener from their belief in "what is 'music," Dead Voices layers both natural and processed layers into a thick mat of sound that provides the listener many paths to travel and worlds to experience. This accretion of sound allows for layers to be added seamlessly while still spinning circularly and repetitively. The songs vary in thickness and harshness, too, so those shying away from a full onslaught will do well to check out some of the thinner, less dense tracks ("Hafted Maul" and "Papa Papa Revers," for example). While the first two colossally snowballing noise tracks are the original Abrader tracks (plus "Hafted Maul"), the other four tracks are colossal in their own right, albeit in an industrial/ambient way. Built along the same swirling persistence, the added tracks fit very well alongside the originals, and time has proven us very lucky to have all seven tracks placed together on Redux.

Nearing its 30-year anniversary, Dead Voices On Air's debut gets the deluxe treatment from Cold Spring. Abrader Redux may have been a long time coming since its last reissue on Lens, but the additional tracks make this worth the wait. Nearly 70 minutes of hypnotic experimental music, Abrader Redux has a little something for everyone seeking the outre and those looking for an alternative to traditional music composition.
