There Was A Fish In The Percolator - Wrapped In Plastic [HNW Netlabel - 2022]There Was A Fish In The Percolator is a new project from long-term British wall noise scenester/ creator James Shearman-A Raja's Mesh men, and many other projects- as well running two labels HNW Netlabel (which released this) and Small Worm. This new project is themed around the cult and surreal TV series Twin Peaks. The releases cover artwork takes in a photo of a woman’s wet hair lying on a plastic sheet- which relates back to the discovery of the body of Laura Palmer- the small-town teen girl's murder, which much of the first few seasons of Twin Peaks revolve around. The link to the release can be found here.
The single track is entitled “Wrapped In Plastic”- and comes in at just shy of the twenty-minute mark. The ‘wall’ is built around a simplistic-if-effective blend of rapidly buffeting ‘n’ baying tone, which is underfed by constantly skittering static grit. The textures are balanced to perfect effect, with the buffeting being higher than the grit elements- to create a feeling of weathered sadness, and solemn mystery- which is of course perfect for the discovery of the grey and wet dead body of Ms Palmer. The length of the ‘wall’ is perfect- putting across its entrancing brutal battering- yet not overstaying its welcome. The two elements- save one pronounced shift around the 7th minute- remain very much fixed in their attack.
So in finishing There Was A Fish In The Percolator is a curious and most worthy new project from Mr Shearman, and I do hope this won’t be a one-off, because of Twin Peaks offers lots of great inspiration for creating walled noise. Roger Batty
