Rien - Another Contact Mic Recording [Abhorrent After Death - 2022]Another Contact Mic Recording is the welcome return of Stockholm-based Rien, who creates sparsely realized, yet always engaging textured noise craft. This recent(ish) pro CDR appears on USA’s Abhorrent After Death, and features a single track that comes in at just over the forty-two-minute mark. Fitting the project's pared back/ minimal approach the CDR comes presented in an all-black paper envelope with a darker grey stuck on the label, featuring the projects blocky logo, web links, and details of brief details of the recording- April 9th 2022, in one single take- which is most impressive, when you considered repeated micro detail patterns/ and the ‘walls’ focus. The CDR can be purchased directly from here. The single untitled track comes in at the 42.25 mark. It's built around an extremely sparse textural map, which consists of a blend of rolling on ‘n’ off static grain flows, constricted crinkles, less persistent but longer rips, and thinner pop ‘n’ grit textures. And despite the ‘walls’ very stripped back and sparse presentation- the patterns are detailed and involving in their unfolding, making this appealing to not only fans of paired back noise studies, but those who enjoy general detailed and intricate sound studies/ minimalism. As I mentioned early it is most engaging in it’s unfold, and really gets the grey matter working as you follow the patterns, and analyse the shifts and sudden darts with the tracks just over a forty-two-minute run. So Another Contact Mic Recording is a worthy addition to this project's back catalogue- which is now moving towards around forty releases. So one for those who enjoy their walls/ textured noise very much pared back, but still complex and rewardingly detailed. Roger Batty
