Requiem For A Vampire - Untitled 2 [HNW Netlabel - 2022] Requiem For A Vampire is a Wellingborough, UK-based wall noise project- which seemingly started back in 2021. And Untitled 2, is as its title suggests its second release. It’s a digital release, that takes in a single spot on twenty-minute wall, which has a subtle atmospheric edge to the ragged rumbling ‘n’ grit bound wall. The release appears on the UK-based HNW netlabel. With the monochrome artwork taking in a close-up picture of a female hand holding a tipped on its side beaker/ goblet. The release can be found here.
I’m guess because of the project's name, the theme here is the arty and erotic 1971 film of the same name by French auteur Jean Rollin. Which found two women- who initially dressed as clowns- trapped in a creepy ‘n’ crumbling gothic castle, which might be inhabited by a human bloodsucker. So I’m also guessing the picture on the front cover is also from said film…though I can’t be certain, I’ve seen/own the film…but it’s few years since I saw it last.
The spot-on twenty-minute wall’ is fairly simple, though effective enough. It’s built around a constantly rumbling boil, which is edged by a smaller jitter static grain. The whole thing is decidedly stark and focused in its intent. Though it’s certainly giving me subtle vibes of ageing stone building creepiness, giving me images of darting shadows and furtive faces darting around the side of dusk-set crumbling walls.
Untitled 2 will reward those looking for the starker, yet lightly atmospheric side of the walled noise genre. I’ve always been a sucker for film-themed wall noise, and I don’t recall another Rollin-related project( though maybe Julien Skrobek did do one Rollin-focused release?!)- so I do hope we’ll get more from this project, and of course, it’s always great to see projects operating in the sadly rather small UK scene.
