Koobaatoo Asparagus - Shadows Of Our Personality [No Skinny Jeans - 2022]Shadows Of Our Personality presents us with two-quarter slices of HNW from San Diego-based walled noise project Koobaatoo Asparagu. With the tone moving from dense pelt ‘n’ hack, through to weathered and swirlingly baying. The release is a digital download on the artist's own label no skinny Jeans. Cover artwork wise we get a monochrome picture of a glowing white-eyed shadow figure, which looks like it’s holding a hacksaw. The release can be found just here.
Both tracks here are self-titled, and the first track is a fairly rapid blend of choppy low-end hack and cluttering descending pelt. The textures here are tightly brought together to create a feeling of thick frozen battering- as if you are trying to walk through a snowball & icicle-filled winter storm. The lows create a nice feeling of compressing & meaty depth, while the mids featuring more skittering 'n' snapping sensibilities.
The second track switches to looser battering flow- as we find a wider if buffeting bay, which is added to glitching slices, pops, and snaps. If the first ‘wall’ felt like walking full into a winter storm, this feels more like a weary plod- as the ice wind drone in your ears and bitterly lashes at your bared face. The whole thing managers to feel bleaker, yet still fairly urgent in its droning/ lightly skip-along flow.
While most of the world is currently baking ‘n’ roasting in its global warming summer, Shadows Of Our Personality sets us down in a battering ‘n’ baying sonic cold-ness. All making for a compelling half an hour long release…which I guess you’d say sits between being an EP and LP. Roger Batty
