Koobaatoo Asparagus - Strange Ways [No Skinny Jeans - 2022]Strange Ways is a recent two-track release from ultra prolific San Diego walled noise project Koobaatoo Asparagus. One track is raw ‘n’ thickly crusty, and the other hollowed out and brutally baying. The release is digital and appears on the project label No Skinny Jeans. Cover artwork wise we have a murky monochrome picture of what looks like a woman and a gimp mask-headed masked man getting on some S & M action on a bed/ or frame. The release can be downloaded here. Both tracks here are self-titled, and both hit at dead on the fifteen-minute mark. So the first track opens with an unrelenting mixture of muffled low-end galloping and hissing slightly smarting static rush. By around the middle of track, I’m making out this brooding aircraft droning bass tone, which is been overlaid by a rattling ‘n’ rushing mesh of judder. In its last few minute s slight hints of more sear mids and the occasional appearance of buried higher sweeps. The other track feels blunter and bluffingly brutally in its attack. We start out with a mixture of loosely choppy mid-range rattle, buffeting spin, and vaguely dusty static cluttering. Around the five-minute mark, we shift to a blend of brooding bass purr and cluttering hack- which sounds very much like the sound of a distant helicopter. And by its last quarter, the two elements have become nicely wrapped in a wavering ‘n’ wonkily embrace…with the whole thing playing out in a wonderful slowly sludgy chug. In finishing Strange Ways is another consistent release from Koobaatoo Asparagus- as I like both of the ‘walls’ offered here, and the murky sleazed theme/ artwork is good too. Roger Batty
