Io - Bloody [Gates of Hypnos - 2022]Io is a newcomer to the world of walled noise. It’s from Porto Alegre, Brazil, and seemingly released three or so releases thus far- with Bloody being one of them. This digital release on Poland’s Gates of Hypnos severs a single thirty-minute wall, which has a decidedly dense and drilling take on the wall form. Cover artwork wise we have a photo of a blue and white tile, featuring a crowded battlefield- with horses, fallen bodies, dust, and wind buffeting flags- with the album's title below it. The release can be heard/ downloaded here .
The single and self-titled track comes in at 30.02 mark. The ‘wall’ is a constantly rushing ‘n’ feasting blend of beaded ‘n’ buzzing high end, and thinner drilling-slightly rattling low end. These textures are fed together to create a thick/ head in a vice-like intensity, which is both airless and battering. To my ears, there is a rather insect-like quality to ‘wall’, and when you put this in the context of the battle theme, one's mind is set alight with images of fly amassed battlefields which are rank with blood, pus, and faeces. The whole thing possesses a nice block the world out pull, and while personally, I didn’t make out any audio illusion within the track- I found it an entrancing ride into rushing and unstoppable wall-matter.
It's always nice to see new acts appearing in the worldwide wall scene- and from what I’ve heard on Bloody Io shows a lot of promise. So if you enjoy dense and searingly rushing wall making, then this is certainly something that will appeal. Roger Batty
