Danish dark sound artist Ana Fosca has come to the Helen Scarsdale Agency for her latest swath of grim electronics, Poised at the Edge of Structure. Dark, dreary, noisy, and evocative, the dozen pieces presented offer a harrowing glimpse at the sound of despair, hopelessness, and grief. While Fosca is fond of the phrase, "mathematics of grief," Structure plays more like the "stewing of grief," allowing all the sonic flavors to mingle and coalesce into a very satisfying whole. While grief is a hard emotion to process and get through, the resulting art that comes from it can help to inspire others in many different ways. Crawling, creeping forward with a fluid and dynamic low end, Poised at the Edge of Structure sets itself up deep in the listener's psyche early on as an exercise in self-analysis. Sonic shadow work, Fosca provides ample opportunity for the sounds on display to serve as the mirror for reflection and a pathway to processing. Darkness and shadow reside in everyone in different amounts, how much of this is recognized and addressed is up to the individual. While there's no direct guide to examine and address this, evocative music helps lead the listener/self-healer further inward. Like the yarn that kept Theseus from getting lost, holding onto the changing, evolving sounds of Structure allows the listener the freedom to return to the outside and provides safe exploration.
Constructed with varying layers and approaches, Structure has many slowly moving pieces that rest upon each other and help to reinforce each aspect of the composition. Utilizing varying degrees of noise, the tracks change their approaches and levels of darkness to cover a wider spectrum, allowing further glances inward and avoiding getting repetitive. The slight differences between the pieces allows each to remain separate, but still come together to make Structure a cohesive whole.
A newer project to arrive, Ana Fosca's latest, Poised at the Edge of Structure is wonderfully constructed and carefully played out. Evoking many different emotions, the deep dive inward that is allowed is most welcome, and the composition allows the space for this to happen. Dark and grim doesn't always have to be oppressive, and Fosca shows that here. Sometimes all you need is subtle guidance and a finger pointed in the right direction.
