Niil - Distimia [Self release - 2022]Distimia is a gnarly ‘n’ nasty example of walled noise from Brazilian project Niil. It’s a self-released digital track that slides in at just under the half-an-hour mark, and boy it’s brutally battering in its intent and attack. Going from the projects bandcamp Niili project started around the year 2017- only releasing a hand full of physical releases, and these largely seem to be split. Their main focus is on the digital self-released material, with so far their Bandcamp listing around a 100 plus digital releases. I’ve now heard a few of the project's self-released work, and for the most part, it’s rewarding enough, if not terrible skilful or cleverly executed wall-matter, that’s urgent and unforgiving. Head here, to hear this release, and the projects other work.
The self-titled track featured here comes in at dead on the twenty nine-minute mark. The ‘wall’ is constructed around a mix of very rapid judder jitter, a rolling bass bound drag ‘n’ drone, and a few blunt ripping subtones. Brought together these elements create a rapid and roughly ragging ‘wall’, which batters away at ones sonic sensor in a focused and nasty manner. There is nothing nuanced or subtle in any of the textures, and if your after a ‘wall’ that pins you down and unrelenting attacks you, Distimia will scratch that itch.
In finishing Distimia is a no-nonsense and brutal example of the HNW form, with a rapid and ragging attack, which never lets up. So strap yourself down and get ready damn good sonic hiding. Roger Batty
