Niks & Placenta Lyposuction - Maklavun Tholos [Gates Of Hypnos - 2022]Maklavun Tholos is a walled noise collaboration that presents us with nearing an hour worth of rattling ‘n’ rumbling wall matter. The track brings together British project Niks, and Croatian based Placenta Lyposuction- with the theme here being a Bronze Age site near Rovinj and Šorići, Istria, which is something a little different from the normal focuses of the wall genre. The release is on Poland’s Gates Of Hypnos, who in recent years has become one of the main labels consistent releasing with-in the wall-noise scene. It comes presented as a digital download- with the monochrome artwork featuring what looks like old chalked stone. A bit more about the theme/ focus here from the label's website’ Tholos Maklavun is a unique but threatened Bronze Age site near Rovinj and Šorići, Istria. A local quarry is systematically consuming the hill around it, creating cracks in the cliff which could collapse at any time and which would destroy this archaeological site for all time, as well as a dromos leading to it. A rescue operation or preferably a halt to the quarrying are urgently required. If you’d like to find out more, or download drop by here
The single self-titled track rolls in at just a few seconds under the hour mark. It’s built around a blend of rapidly rumbling ‘n’ rolling low-end, hacking-to-rattling static grain, and a few distant hiss bound hovers. Together these very much create a ‘wall’ that sounds akin to someone steadily quarry for stone, with an undertone of scraping-to-hissing chalkiness. It’s a ‘wall’ that feels both persistent & dusty, with the textures seemingly unaltered throughout. Though that said we do get a few neat sonic tricks occurring, like a shift in layer focus, and more skittering-to-ragged tendency in both key textures. The textures and their weave is nothing fancy or too involved, but it makes for an appealing enough hour-long wall, for those looking for a persistent mix of rattle ‘n’ rumble.
Sadly it seems this will be the final( or last for a long time release) from UK wall project Niks, which is a pity as I’ve always enjoyed what I’ve heard from the project, this release included. So if you are in the market for an hour-long example of ‘wall’ craft, with a fairly distinctive theme, and a rewarding enough mix of rock like texturing- this will certainly appeal. Roger Batty
