Niili - Scare Away [Self release - 2021]Scare Away is a twenty-five-minute wall from Brazilian project Niili. It’s a rapidly skittering ‘n’ skirting example of the walled noise form, with a decidedly static rip bound tone to the noise texturing on display. This is a self-released digital affair- which can be found here. The monochrome cover, features a screaming face like selection of shapes within a woodland. It’s ok, I guess though personal both the releases title, and the artwork don’t really fit with the ‘wall’ on offer here, which is way more nervy and manic, than it is creepy or scary….with the only scenario fitting this wood bound concept/ theme, is maybe been chased by some demented and deranged forest creature, or maybe a demon witch…but maybe I’m put more thought into this wall than is needed.
The ’wall’ slides in at spot on the twenty-five-minute mark, and is built around the constantly jittering ‘n’ jumping rip bound static tone. This, as already mentioned, is very nervy and rapid in its focuses and attack. Throughout it remains set in its urgent and persistent attack- never lessening or let-up. At points, we do get some very slight shifts in the textural map, but largely it remains set and locked in its unfolding. It’s I guess a passable example of the ‘wall’ form, and I get some satisfaction from its jittering and unrepentant attack- though texturally there’s nothing really original or distinctive.
In finishing if you are looking for nearing a half-hour ‘wall’, that’s rapidly jumpy and jittering in its manic attack, and are not too fussed by fresh/ original textural make-up. This certainly fit your need, though I’m not sure if you’d want to return to it much after the initial first few plays, as there's not much depth/ detail hear, that might bring you back for repeated plays.
