Root Cellar - Misophonia [Self release - 2021]

After an absence of coming on for a year here’s a new release from one of my favourite US walled noise projects Root Cellar- aka transgender noise maker Cory Adiee, who also makes noise under the projects banners of Monolithic Torment and Submachine Gun. Misophonia features a single hour-long track, and comes in the form of a self-titled digital download- with the track offering up a great example of tautly tense and rewardingly detailed walled matter.

The release takes its single-word title from a psychiatric problem where individuals experience intense anger and disgust when they hear the sounds made by other human beings. In particular, sounds like chewing, lip-smacking or breathing- can cause either intense anger or physical arousal. The cover artwork is a murky monochrome affair and features a picture of the signpost for Chicago-Read Mental Health Centre- which is located in the Dunning area of the city, and close to the cities Airport O’Hare international airport.

The single track here is titled “Fear you can’t see or feel”, which of course nicely locks into the releases mental health theme. The just shy of hour-long track is built around a selection of tightly focused noise texturing patterns- we have circling comb-like flick, a constant crackle ‘n’ snap, a descending pop patter-nation, and some neat jittering metal staple like picks. Like the best wall making your mind focus in on first one textural path after another, and as a result, one's mind gets well and truly hooked on the textural flow of the track- meaning you remain firmly hooked over the tracks hour runtime.

It’s great to see new work from this project, and let us hope new stuff comes sooner than another year down the line. If you enjoyed nicely entrancing and rewardingly detailed textured noise then this is well worth checking out head here to hear/ download  Misophonia.
