Ato Var - Ethics Of Interpreter [ Geräuschmanufaktur - 2020]From the Summer of last year Ethics Of Interpreter is C40/ digital download bringing together three slices of keyboard droning and low-key noise unease from this Danish project. Sadly the tapes now sold out, but it can still be downloaded from Geräuschmanufaktur Bandcamp. The white label on the white tape comes in a colour sleeve that features a striking picture of a dead vine growing over a black and red wall. Really nice picture, and a classy designed release- so it’s a pity it's now out of print.
Ato Vari is a project from Copenhagen, and behind it is one Mads Gravers Nielsen. It’s been active since 2017, releasing thus far seven releases- all of which were in cassette format.
Kicking off the release we have the just over twenty minutes of “Ore”- this is the longest of the three tracks here. It’s a decidedly eerier blend of hoovering organ-like keyboard drone, warbling ritual like reverberations, and gently forking ‘n’ rumbling feedback atmospherics. Flipping over to side two and we have the just over sixteen and a half minutes of “Mulm”- here we find stern and gloomy drone simmers edgy by slowly uncurling sub-tone tendrils of dread. With the release been topped off by the nearing thirteen minutes of “Rache”- this has a great air of classic horror organ dread- as it flows out brooding and sinister key sustains, with some effective uneasy and subtle drilling tone simmers coming off it, making this the best out of the three tracks offered up here.
Ethics Of Interpreter is a release for those who like pressing and uneasy drone matter, with subtle noise touches. I’d certainly like to hear more of Ato Vari work in the future, and it’ll be interesting to see if it deepens its organ focused keyboard sound. Roger Batty
