The Necks - Chemist [ReR Megacorp - 2006]The Necks having been together for near on 20 years now and offer a very unequal mix and take on jazz, drone, ambient and experimental music. Chemist is slightly different from there usual one long track album, here we are presented with three diffrent hypnotic audio snapshots, lasting 20 mins each. First up is Fatal which links repetative organ pumping tone, sinister guitar angles, a driving beat ,noise elements, and edgy piano flourishers. It feels like a car journey through unnameable east European country in the early hours of the morning. You drive on and on in an almost unchanging atmosphere, glancing rusting machinery, barren concrete building fames every so offten. You also seemed to been followed, a cars headlights always just on the edge of your rear viewer mirror, and your sure there following you. Slowly but surely you seem to putting your foot on the accelerator to try and distance your self from them, as the track builds up pace. Bouyant is next , staring with jittering electronic tones, and cymbal pitter patter- and slowly developing piano atmosphere, and double bass flicks appear. The melody and track slowly forming together, to make a edgy rainy day like melody. They really show their skills as great soundcrafters here, building up what seems that seems very minimalistic on first few listens, but builds up it’s intertiwing layers the more you play it. Lastly is Abillera which mixes clock ticking double bass line and sunshiny go ahead piano work, that seems to be running off down the road. Almost in a more Airy Steve Reich way, building up a wonderfully haze of sweet sound- heady with dragon fly summer grace, all make a captivating and beautiful ending to the album. A wonderful example of three musical craftsmen at the height of their trade, making breath taking soundcraft, quite unlike anyone else.
