Troum - Da-Pu-Ri-To-Jo [Zoharum - 2021]Da-Pu-Ri-To-Jo is a twelve-track CD collection from highly respected German ambient duo Troum. It focuses in the single/ep tracks from between the years 2004 and 2016. The compilation shows both the scope, craft, and talent of the project- and surprisingly for a compilation, the whole thing flows well as an even, balanced and varied album. The release appears on prolific and respected industrial/ experimental electronica/ ambient Polish label Zoharum-with the CD been presented in a six-panel digipak, that features a sleek yet moody grey, black and white colour scheme. The tracks are not laid out here in a chronological manner but instead are set so as to flow as a consistent and varied album of shorter ambient works( between three & eight minutes).
The album kicks off in fine mood grabbing form with “Aerugo” it finds a mid-to-high ranged haunting melody line, blended a with low-end drone hover, and atmospheric sub-tone detail taking in ringing-yet-cold simmer, off-key waving harmonics, and a few touches of wordless choral unease. As we move through we come to the death-rattle like subterranean unease of “Das Air” which brings together waving & unsettling low end rumble/ drags, with creepy reverberations & shadowy tone ebbs. There’s the chilling backward fed choirs & rising dark tension of “ Nargis” with it's hoovering harmonics & pressing mids. Or the mournfully regal sweep and hazed jangling atmospherics the just shy of four minutes worth of “Victoria”.
All in all, Da-Pu-Ri-To-Jo is another very worthy collection from Troum- highlight their ability to create varied & memorable ambience, which nicely moves between deep & tar-black, onto unsettlingly hovering, through to mysterious golden and beyond. Roger Batty
