Romain Perrot & Quentin Rollet - L'Impatience des Invisibles [Decimation Sociale/ReQords - 2020]L'Impatience des Invisibles is a French collaboration between noisemaker/ da-da/ demented folk maker Romain Perrot- known to most for his nihilistic & unmoving wall noise project Vomir, and improviser/ co-owner of avant label Rectangle- Quentin Rollet. The five-track CD album is decidedly unpredictable-yet-often compelling blending & mix of throbbing-to- purring industrialized noise, active noise texturing, playfully harmonic- to avant-grade jazz, slurred improv, & warped organ/easy listening music. In all the album rolls in at forty-eight minutes- with each of the tracks running between five & thirteen minutes. Kicking things off we have one of the longer tracks "Le Chant du Bouvier"- this starts off in decidedly riping ‘n’ rumbling wall noise form, but fairly soon sweeps of wince-inducing high tones are added to the mix along with swoops of bleakly spacy ‘n’ chugging synth texturing that have a decidedly Throbbing Gristle feel to them. As the track moves along the pair nicely move between sudden build-ups & stretches of noise/ synth tone and thin gritty textured moments. At around the fifth-minute mark, the Sax comes into play- this nicely moves between seared & ragged, rapid & piping, and more melodic & moody- with all the while various noise, synth, and hovering organ matter going on underneath. I particularly enjoy the moment around the nine-minute mark, where we get some nice wonky interplay between feed-backed & pitch sliding organ, and horn work.
As we move on we go from the sinister & brooding “Grigorium Verum”- which it’s a mixture of ghoulish synth purr, moody feedback sweeps and compressed reed & mouth breathing tones. With latter on some more wonderful mournful & waving church organ been added to mix too. Onto the track "Sans Aveu"- with its blend of throbbing bass brood, creepy 'n' twitchy improv fiddling, creepy static grain- these are top by great barked yet slightly drunken & robotic vocals- latter on the sax kicks in again to nice dartingly lyrical to seared effect. This track is certainly one of the highlights of the release with its mixture of stripped-yet building dread, vocal oddness, and bass bound unease. The album leads out on "Embrocation Siamoise"- here things are slightly more formal musical, though still decidedly wonky & wavering. As we find cheesy-to- off colour 80’s keyboard runs & dart, edged by sways & swirls of feedback swoop & textured noise atmosphere.
L'Impatience des Invisibles is really a great collaborative release between these two French experimental sound makers. You can clearly hear they are having fun creating what's on offer here, yet at the same time it all mangers to balance well between brooding atmosphere, textural/ instrumental playfulness, and a real focus on creative & rewarding interplay. Let us hope this isn't a one-off because I'd really like to hear what else Monsieur Perrot & Rollet can create together in the future. Roger Batty
