Arcada - Projections [Edged Circle Productions - 2020]Black metal project Arcada where founded in 2012, originating from the cult metal breeding ground of Peru. So far they’ve put out three demos and one EP of its occult, epic-minded black metal. Over the last years the quartet has refined its sulphurous, raw and aggressive- yet traditional sound, and here we have the projects full length debut Projections appearing on Edged Circle Productions. Projections doesn’t waste any time building a mystical muse- it pulsates straight ahead with a very dark and heavy sound. The five tracks are a consistent mix of slow, medium and faster parts. The projects powerful sound is accompanied by a decent amount of tremolo picking and blast beats, which also give the tracks often a very rough feel. The strong riffs are present through-out, and each is embellished with unique melancholic feel. Underneath the bass guitar appears as demonic counterpoint to the guitar with a lot of subtlety depth
The tracks are fairly epic , while the vocals are a powerful mix of mostly high Black Metal screams, shouting and deep growls but also some spoken word parts. The 90s metal feeling is added to by an almost ceremonially vibe, but at the same time gives the sound a modern feel, even though the entire production sounds very dark and raw. The texts of the individual tracks deal with the subjects of occultism, black magic and philosophy.
The together the five pieces have a total length of thirty nine minutes. Each track functions as its own corridor leading into a more grandiose - and frightening - landscape when it’s brought together as a whole album. The eight-minute title track begins with a double riff pattern and is accompanied by rolling, ubiquitous drums. The vocals join around the minute mark, and offers us tortured screams, some of which remind me of the vocal work of Bethlehem. The black metal sound is pretty traditional here.
The second piece "IAO" begins with a short spoken intro, followed by the double riff pattern for which the genre is known and strong polyphonic vocals. "O" offers us a little more. After about 1/3 of the way there is a rapid change of riffs which leads us into a wall of drums and guitars, combined with powerful, polyphonic screams. "Lunar Possession" is the fourth track on the album. This track certainly doesn't win any points for originality, but it is precisely here that you can see how the protagonists maintain the mood with their powerful vocal work.
The 5th track "Setheus" closes the album with a length of over eleven minutes. The vocals shout at us, ready to lift the horrors of hell out of the abyss. Here the bass guitars can finally be heard clearly and go up and down several octaves. Tempo changes are initiated and jump back and forth like a staccato and let the piece end in a sample of spoken words and shrill, disillusioned screams and whimpers ...
Arcada delivered us an worthy occult Black Metal album with Projections. As I’ve noted in a few in my BM reviews before, I personally think that mood is carried by the vocals. And that's exactly what I liked so much here! The powerful polyphonic singing, whether shouted, screamed, grunted or spoken. The album lives from it! My favorite titles on are clearly "IAO" and "Setheus". Jan Warnke
