Dosis Letalis - Scales of Justice [Libraion Records - 2018]Scales of Justice is a C90/ digital download release from Serbian wall noise project Dosis Letalis- offered up here are two forty five minute examples of densely weaved, yet subtle creative and entrancing. The smoky grey cassette features bright yellow labels on each side of the tape. And this comes in bright yellow card slip sleeve, on the front we have a drawing of a hung-up body stripped of its flesh, and on the back short text about the releases concept- with the texts in black and red. It came out summer last year, in an edition of just five copies, and it’s not really clear if any copies are left, as the label Bandcamp doesn’t make it clear. If you have even a passing interest in the walled noise scene, I’m sure you’ll be aware of Dosis Letalis- as since 2015 this Serbian project has been one of the most prolific-yet- quality bound names in the scene. With the project's output going from more edgy & creative textured bound work to more traditional wall matter, through to blends of both. First, up on side A we have “The Scales Of Justice Are Unbalanced I”, and here we find a decidedly enchanting mixture of constantly rolling & slightly muffled judder, and crisp ‘n’ thin spitting static. The whole ‘wall’ has an almost organic & slightly uneven feel to its flow- and at times it seems like the whole thing may either suddenly pare back, falter or fade away- yet it remains fixed & firm in its attack. Both textures here are not too experimental or wacky, yet they are subtly creative & the project tempers & spins them out in a very appealing fashion that’s nicely edged with nuanced & subtle detail play - really I could have easily listened to this ‘wall’ for an hour plus. Flipping over to side B and we have “The Scales Of Justice Are Unbalanced II”- this ‘wall’ feels a little more roughshod & uneven than the first side, though once again we have two textures that aren’t too far from the first sides elements. We have a tumbling ‘n’ slightly buffeting judder, and this is surrounded by a constant spit 'n' spotting of static grain- together these create another very entrancing ‘wall’, and in some ways it’s even more so than the first side as the flaws in each element really pulls you deeper in- as you lock into first one texture pattern, then the next trying to discern any shift of change in either. Once again this track retains a set & fixed feel about it, and at times both textures seem to tangle around each other in a most rewarding manner. It’s a great second track, which works well as a partner to the first track- all making this an all-round great release. With Scales of Justice Dosis Letalis once again proves why he’s such a respected & consistent figure in the wall noise scene- as the release severs up two very appealing ‘walls’ that are both subtly creative in their texture selection & worthily nuanced in their unfolds- as I said early, not sure if this still available in cassette form, but it’s certainly well worth checking down if you can.Roger Batty
