The Folkloristik Formula - Ninco Nanco [Ominous Records - 2019]I believe Ninco Nanco is the second physical release from this collaborative wall noise project, which brings together the minds behind Anonymous Masturbaudioum & Rien. Featured here are two thirteen minute tracks- that offering of a layer buffeting ‘n’ baying take on wall-matter…the release originally appeared in May of this year on a C30, but sadly these are now all gone- so ones only option is digital download from Ominous Records. The darkly smoked clear cassette is presented in a darkly smoked case- this features monochrome artwork taking in a picture of Ninco Nanco- an Italian Brigandage, who apparent one of the most important criminal figures after the Italian Unification- that went on between 1815- 1848. Nanco was known for his gurilla warfare, and crulity to his emines. He was executed in 1864, and the picture used here is just after his execution with him slummed against a pile of bricks. Seemingly all of The Folkloristik Formula work is themed around historic Italian criminals/ mafia.
The first sides track is "Il Terrore Del Vulture"- and here we find a 'wall' built around a dense ‘n’ muddily churning rumble, a buffting jitter, and some slight skittering grain play. The whole thing creates a very nicely encasing & ear battering track- which really feels akin to trying to walk in the middle of force ten storm between tall brick buildings, which are lined with lots of tin lean-tos. The meaty base initial sucks you in, then the top layers keep you nicely held- it’s a pity it didn’t run longer, as I could have easily stayed with this wall for well over half an hour. It’s a great first track, and it really does nicely highlight both parties sound that are here unified here to create a distinctive new feel.
Moving onto the second track "Sangue E Violenza"- and once again it’s another nicely dense & layered wall. Here we get a mix of the following- a slight more pared-back circular rumbling, a hissing bound static gallop, and some slighting smaller cluttering sub-tones. This ‘wall’ feels slight less encasing in its attack, and at times you feel the whole may start to thin back or faultier, yet it never does- remaining firm in its semi uneven flow. Once again the pair work well together, with-in their strengths as individual wall-makers, to create another disctive sounding slab of wall-matter- if pushed I’d say this wasn’t quite as moorish as the first side track, but it’s most worthy in it’s own right.
It’s always great to hear familiar wall-makers collaborating together to create some fairly unequal/ different from what they normal do- and that’s exactly what we get with Ninco Nanco. Seemingly there are plans a foot to bring more collaborators into the fold on later Folkloristik Formula releases- which sounds most promising…so in conculsion if you enjoy interestingly layered/ built walled noise, with fairly original themes then I’d say pick up this release.
