The Dead Yesterdays - Adrift In The Dark [Void Singularity Recordings - 2019]Following up from Happiness Is An Illusion last year's physical debut from Scottish wall noise venture The Dead Yesterdays- here’s Adrift In The Dark, which is a single hour-long wall from the project. As with Happiness Is An Illusion this release appears on northern English HNW/ noise label Void Singularity Recordings- coming as either a CDR or digital download. The pro made CDR comes in a jewel case featuring very title fitting artwork of single sparse lights surrounded by the darkness- this release had an edition of ten copies, and as of this review the label still has copies for sale. The first release from this project had a rather industrialized feel to its wall-craft, and while there are still hints of that type of thing in some of the textures attack/ feel here- I’d say the single track here feels a lot more blunt, blurred, and ill-defined in it's layer feel. The ‘wall’ is built around a fairly rapid & set blend of slightly buffing roll, which is held in a mixture of thinner rattle & blunt clutter. The whole thing has quite a washed-out, and at time muddled rushing flow - I can’t say the textures used here are anything fresh or original- but I do like the way the layers seeming blur together in a fairly haunted-yet-searing manner. I think I found the track most rewarding as less concentrated listening- then say focused textured studies, as firstly, and as already mentioned the textures do tend to blur. Next, while we do get some very slight adjustments in the textures patterns, but there’s nothing major or vast. In summing up this track- I’d say it’s on the cusp of almost become DNW, but due to both the weight/ thickness of the whole thing, it’s best described as hazed HNW. I can’t say as was quite as impressed by A Drift In The Dark, as the projects first release on Void Singularity- as The Dead Yesterdays has stepped away from the more distinct industrial edges to creating a fairly run-of-the-mill long-form wall- sure the blurring rushing of the whole thing is pleasing enough- but nothing a seasoned wall fan won't have heard before. I’d say if your after a 'wall' that you can fall into & get lost in for an hour- in a muffled, yet still batter manner- this will do the trick, I just wish maybe a bit more of the projects initial sound identity had been kept.Roger Batty
