Circle of Shit - Sex [Void Singularity Recordings - 2019]Sex is an ear shredding ‘n’ head grinding example of long-form, extremely dense and nasty walled noise from Finland’s Circle of Shit. Here on Uk’s Void Singularity Recordings is a CDR/digital download of the release- the physical edition of the release is ltd to ten copies, and as of this review the label still have copies available by their Bandcamp. The CD jewel case features on its front cover a framed like cracked paint mass of black color-this image is repeated on the inside sleeve. The back cover features a heads cut off image of a group of men around a table- on top of this was a series of texts describing the concept behind the release. As far as I recall this release is my first taster of the projects work- though they have been active since 2011- seemingly starting off more as an noise/industrial/ experimental project- through recent releases have seen the project leaning more towards a denser/thicker wall sound, and Sex most certainly is all out walled noise- of it's most searing and nasty. Offered up here is a single hour-long track. This presents the listener with a near-impenetrable mass of roasting & rushing sound, that is underfed by buried & creepy unidentifiable sound detail. The main mass of the sound here is a brutal dense blend of shearing static, jittering and juddering white noise, and the occasional skittering mid-to-lower end rush. These elements are tightly meshed together to create a very world blocking and crude wall, though there are subtle touches of sleaze and uneasy present- this comes from these distant elements- which take in a weird mumbling/ moaning texture, blunt muffled & airless drone element wonders, and this ever so often jarring metallic knock. You never fully get to hear what exactly these buried elements are, and this nicely pulls you into the whole thing. The textures utilized here are a little mundane and crude in their feel, though the way they are fed out in a crushing, almost industrial tipped manner, makes the whole thing appealing enough for its fifty-six minute runtime. Though due to the less rewarding textural detail, I think this release works best in a more ambient manner- so your hearing it but not concentrate what’s going on too closely. In conclusion, if you are a fan of dense, and crudely crushing walled noise I think you’ll get something from Circle Of Shit’s Sex. Roger Batty
