Ratteknaeghen/Damien De Coene - S/T [Ominous Records - 2018]Here’s a two way Euro wall-noise split bringing together Dutch project Ratteknaeghen, and Spanish noise-droner Damien De Coene. Both tracks here rather have a constantly spinning roller quality about them- with one focusing in on rapid industrial like wall-ing, and the other on a more moody & churning introspective wall- matter. This C40/digital release appeared in late November last year on Stockholm based noise label Ominous Records- coming in a physical edition of twenty copies. The plan black shelled tape comes a densely layered organic collage like cover- which is coloured in greys, blacks, and pinks. As of this review, the label still has few copies of this tape left, though not many…so act now or regret!.
On the first side, we have a track from the Dutch project Ratteknaeghen- which is one of the projects of Kevin Jansen, who’s been active in the euro noise scene for the last ten years or so, and will be most known for his Svartvit project. The track here is entitled “Dwass”- and this sees the bringing together of several layers of rolling & rattling textures- all to create a fairly industrialized wall. We have a distant muffled-yet constant rolling tone at the base of the ‘wall’, this is added to by more violent & at times fairly roughshod rapid roller rattle, judder, and cluttering. The way the layers are built creates a nicely active quality- for the first half or so the layers sound relatively fixed, though later on the top layers seem to get even more violent & vigorous in their attack. It’s been some time since I’ve heard anything from any of Jasen’s project- and I must say I found this an enthralling, if not particularly creative bit of wall-matter, that certainly kept me held for its twenty-minute runtime.
Moving onto the second side & we have a track from Spanish based Damien De Coene, who has been latterly releasing some great work under the project name of Charles Razeur- where he creates stark drone matter/ stark ANW. The track here is entitled "Plague upon Light"- it’s built around a blend of slurred rolling & juddering textures, which together creating this hypnotically numbing sensation of constant descent. It’s like your eternal cascading down a long grey tube- and as you go along it seems your pace is steady slowing & decreasing. Your mind really does get warped up in the densly bleak blend of slurred judder, blunt rattle & starkly soothing jitter. I guess you’d say the tracks on the cusp of numbing HNW & ANW- you can certainly tell it’s from the same person he did Charles Razeur project, as there is a distinct understanding & feeling of total lulling despair present- which not many other artists can manage to attain.
In conclusion, this is an effective split- showing two artists very different take on utilizing similar textural settings. I enjoy both sides of the tape, but of the two I found the second the most rewarding when re-visited. Roger Batty
