Architectonicum - Constructionis [Geräuschmanufaktur - 2018]Constructionis is the debut release from Architectonicum- the three-piece collective that brings together some of the finest & most respected names in Euro/ balkan HNW/static texturing. The projects made up of UK’s Clive Henry & James Shearman(A Raja's Mesh men), Serbian Nemanja Nikolic (Dosis Letalis)- with project concept & manifesto by Jan Warnke – who is the sleazy HNW project Sacred Climax, and also runs the Geräuschmanufaktur label. Constructionis comes in the form of a three C40 tape set-which is presented in a black paper envelope with a string tie closure. Inside the envelope are individual card slip sleeves for each tape, a paper insert with track listing/ etc on, and a four-page manifesto detailing the themes/ rules behind this project & this release.
Each tape is laid out thus- one six-minute & thirty-three second solo track from each player on side one, then a single twenty-minute collaborative track from all three on the second side. So in all the release takes in twelve tracks- with the solo tracks focusing more of the often stripped back wall craft, and the lengthier collaborative track been denser & more layered.
As there is a lot of textural ground covered here I think it’s best to home on a few of present favorites instead of a track by track breakdown. So first lets discuss a few of my favourite solo tracks- setting the release on to great start is "Laterculus I" from Murus I( tape 1)- this is by Mr. Henry, and it finds him offering up a eerier-yet-manic wall built around this mesh of constantly descending mesh tones, which sound akin to mix of tight lashing vibe tones & slowly shifting rain stick textures- together these create this feel akin to watching one of those pinscreen frames fill-up with a strange series of shapes, then flatten again, before repeating the whole thing again. Or another classy & memorable solo track is "Laterculus II" from Murus II, which finds Mr. Shearman creating this wall that feels akin to something roughly tunneling into the side of your head- with its blend of crude & winding down bass- bound scurrying tones, which are edged with thinner jittering & jumping tones. Or the distant earthy crushing meets effective grainy crackle of "Laterculus III" from Murus III - which sees Mr. Nikolic bringing together a deep-yet-fading ominous noise drone, with a detail building map of worthy & expressive crackle & crunch.
Of the collab tracks- all are fairly effective & worthy, with each party bringing worthy textures to the mix- but my favorite is "Construct II"- which sees a compelling blend of constantly rolling & rushing low-to-mids, mixed with this weird descending knocking & rattle textured, which are all edged by smaller & more snapping grit & grain. All to create a feeling of complex wall-craft, which at times almost seems to defy sound physics with it's layer make-up & mix balance.
Clearly a lot of time, work & thought has gone into every element of this release- from the tapes packaging, the manifesto, and of course the walls themselves. Let's hope there’s more Architectonicum work in the pipeline, but in the meantime, I’d snap this up fairly quick as it only came in an edition of 30 copies- and with the names involved, and the quality of the release itself- I can’t imagine these will be hanging around long.
